More people are suffering from depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders than ever before. In fact, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the incidences of anxiety and depression increased by 25% on a global scale, according to a brief released by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2022.
Now that the pandemic has eased as far as quarantines are concerned, it is again possible for those suffering from conditions like depression, insomnia, and anxiety to seek treatment. One treatment that research has proven to be effective is neurofeedback, a natural therapy offered by many chiropractors.

Neurofeedback is a kind of biofeedback that uses displays of brain activity in real-time to teach patients how to self-regulate their brain function. The goal of neurofeedback is to improve cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning. Neurofeedback has been used to help people with ADHD, anxiety, depression, migraines, and sleep disorders, to name just a few conditions.
The benefits of neuro feedback are:
Chiropractic care rests on a foundation of alternative treatments, so it is a natural partner for neurofeedback therapy. As a matter of fact, chiropractic care is the most commonly used form of complementary and alternative medicine. It is considered safe and has been found to result in few complications.
Chiropractic care incorporating neurofeedback is a relatively new field, but more patients just like you are using it as an alternative treatment for conditions like ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, and depression. In fact, more than 200 chiropractic offices have integrated this therapy into their practices.
Neurofeedback, sometimes referred to as “EEG biofeedback,” is a state-of-the-art, drug-free, pain-free, and non-invasive method for teaching the brain to function in a more balanced and healthful way. Brainwaves occur at different frequencies for different people and are at the heart of this treatment.
Because of this, neurofeedback for any patient begins with a quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG) evaluation. This tool is designed to evaluate a person’s brainwave patterns.
The process uses a high-tech cap which is placed on the head. The cap contains small sensors that measure and record electrical activity (brainwaves) coming from the brain. You needn’t fear that these sensors are putting any electrical current into the brain; they simply record signals coming from your brain.
The brainwave data generates a report that allows the chiropractic doctor to diagnose whether your brainwave patterns differ from normal. If so, a treatment plan using neurofeedback therapy is created that teaches you to control those problematic waves, usually by watching a game or movie while using the cap.
This training is called Operant Conditioning. Your brain eventually learns to maintain healthy patterns on its own. The ultimate goal is to train you to self-regulate your emotional and physical responses and then transfer that new knowledge to your daily life, long after the treatment ends. As such, the quality of your life can be greatly improved by learning and implementing these new techniques that can help you better manage how your body responds using the Operant Conditioning method.
This varies from person to person. Some people experience improvement within a few sessions, while others take longer to see any noticeable changes. Your chiropractor will guide you by sharing the graph results of each session, which provides a visual reference of improvement.
Long-term follow-ups show some clients have sustained improvements for 10-20 years. Several research studies have demonstrated that additional gains are made a year after the initial treatment is completed as the individual continues to practice what they learned during neurofeedback treatment.
